Morning Briefing: U.S. House Select Committee Holds Final Hearing
U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack is scheduled to hold a final hearing, and will 'will draw on all aspects of its more than yearlong probe.'
Morning Briefing: U.S. House Select Committee on the January 6 Attack is scheduled to hold the Committee’s final public hearing today at 1:00pm (EDT), the Committee’s “closing pitch to Americans will draw on all aspects of its more than yearlong probe.”
Stewart Rhodes, the founder of the Oath Keepers, and other leaders of the far right militia group, “were in contact with Secret Service officials multiple times in late 2020 and leading up to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.”
Rhodes, during an interview on the far right conspiracy InfoWars podcast, “called into a right-wing show to criticize the government’s case and suggest listeners be ‘willing to go to jail’ for their beliefs.”
During the trail of five members of the Oath Keepers, a member of the group “who traveled with the group to Washington D.C. ahead of the Jan. 6 riot described a massive stockpile of firearms and other weaponry that allies had stashed in an Arlington, Virginia hotel.”
The attorney representing Oath Keeper Thomas Caldwell “suggested that Caldwell’s written communications to other Oath Keepers about his 'pre-strike rece (reconnaissance) missions’ were really about determining where the port-a-potties were near the Capitol in case the need arose on Jan. 6.”

Michael Simeone, Ben Dalton, and Candace Rondeaux write that “While startup alt-tech platforms like Parler and Gettr are still relevant, today the platform of choice for many alt-tech activists is the Russian-made, UAE-based social media app Telegram. The shift appears to be a direct response to U.S. tech industry titans’ efforts to regulate false and violent content on their services. Kicked off of Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook, those who hawk spurious COVID-19 cures, protection against 5G radiation, and online anonymizing technologies have found a home on far-right Telegram channels.” [Slate]
Tess Owen reports that “a ‘patriot group’ in Arizona called Lions of Liberty—which is closely tied to the Oath Keepers—is organizing their supporters to go out and conduct round-the-clock surveillance of ballot dropboxes during the midterm elections. It’s the latest sign that groups with clear ties to extremists, galvanized by conspiracy theories, are seeking to take matters into their own hands this election season.” [Vice]
David Neiwert writes that the “election-denialist strategy to target state-level secretary of state offices for a Trumpist takeover springs from the aftermath of the 2020 election, when Trump infamously attempted to strong-arm a number of secretaries of state, including Georgia’s Brad Raffsenperger, into changing the outcome of the election. (Raffensperger, who refused to cooperate, won his primary race for reelection against denialist Jody Hice.) Since then, Trump and his authoritarian cohorts have assiduously sought out and promoted Republican candidates to run for those offices—though in fact many of them wound up losing their states’ primaries.” [Daily Kos]
