The Week's Recommended Reading on Substack:
writes that “it’s hard to make decisions about what you consume and who you listen to in times like these, but with a little discernment and introspection, you can sometimes pinpoint just how much your emotional system is being hijacked in a time where, quite frankly, your emotional system is already hijacked by an authoritarian movement and a worsening political environment.” writes that “corrupted facts are not individual monsters to be slayed. They are not weeds to be pulled out of a garden. In any age, half-truths and tall tales are a fact of life, and the bedrock of politics. If we, the media, continue trying to catch every insufficiently accurate utterance to emerge from every politicians’ mouth, it will cow politicians who speak freely, annoy readers who want actual news coverage, and embolden politicians who want to vilify the media.” writes that “the endless attempts at reform that have persisted for decades have led to unaccountable and deadly forces in every municipality in the United States. What should be simple and common-sense changes to police, like ‘don’t stop people of color or anyone without cause and search them as they walk around their neighborhoods’ haven’t worked.” writes that “like any town on the U.S.-Mexico border, Sásabe is deeply affected by whatever immigration policy changes come from Washington, DC, or Mexico City and their respective immigration agencies. But with little aid coming from either government, border communities are largely on their own.” writes that “efforts to substantiate a large-scale detransition phenomenon have repeatedly fallen flat, eroding the credibility of this argument against gender-affirming care. Earlier this year, Jamie Reed, an employee at a Missouri gender clinic, made several claims that have since been debunked about the treatment provided at the facility.” writes “don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re overreacting about abortion rights. Given the latest evidence that conservatives want to stop women from leaving their states for abortion care, I’d say we’re not nearly ‘hysterical’ enough.”Discussion about this post
