Morning Briefing: The Base, the neo-Nazi White Supremacist terrorist network, is reportedly “continuing to build in the US and planning a new paramilitary training event without fear of local authorities or the FBI,” as online evidence indicates the groups “has real plans for a national gathering this summer where members intend to train in paramilitary drills as in years past.”
This morning, the U.S. Department of Defense reportedly “approved the deployment of 700 U.S. Marines from Camp Pendleton to Los Angeles with a mission of helping to protect federal agents and buildings.”
Right-media pundits and far right social media influencers are making wildly false claims, promoting unfounded conspiracy theories, and using virulently racist rhetoric when commentating on the immigrant rights protest in Los Angeles, California — which have mostly peaceful.
Charlie Kirk explicitly claimed during a recent broadcast that the anti-ICE protesters were connected to the “Great Replacement Theory,” referring to the racist conspiracy theory. “They all hate Christendom. They hate Western civilization. They hate what we have built. This is a global movement of freaks,” Kirk said.
During that same broadcast, Kirk displayed a chart that purported to show the “decline of the white population in Los Angeles over multiple decades,” and the chart appeared to be sourced to American Renaissance, the White Nationalist magazine and website.
Steve Bannon said during a broadcast of the WarRoom podcast that anti-ICE protest were part of the “third world war,” because he claimed many of the protesters were foreign nationals. “Why did it look like a foreign country? They’re foreigners that are doing this. You see the Mexican flags. You see the Palestinian flags. This is a war,” Bannon said.

Steven Gardiner writes that the “Trump administration has announced that, as part of its reorganization of the State Department (along with the now familiar gutting of important programs and firing of topic-area experts), it plans to create what it calls an ‘Office of Remigration.’ Arguments over semantics—the ‘really real’ meaning of a word—are infamously academic, smacking of jargon and insider pretensions. Yet, words are always more than words, and at times certain words reveal far more than intended. Remigration is one of those. Most closely associated with the European far-right, and linked to the venomous conspiracy narrative of the Great Replacement, remigration refers to proposals to expel immigrants and their descendants who do not meet the racial, religious, and cultural criteria of parties like the neo-fascist Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. To be blunt, it refers to ethnic cleansing, and in the United States it’s an unabashedly white nationalist idea. It flows from what I’ve called demographic dystopia, the modern white nationalist movement’s fixation on the idea that high rates of non-white immigration to the U.S. combined with low fertility rates among white people is a recipe for ‘white genocide.’” [Religion Dispatches]
Jack Herrera writes that “with more than eleven million undocumented immigrants already in the country, why would Trump create a population of some five hundred thousand more for ICE to deport? It comes down to timing and fingerprints. Under the new Administration, ICE is putting migrants who have been in the country for less than two years into what’s called ‘expedited removal.’ These proceedings, which, in the past, have been reserved for people caught just after they crossed the border, allow ICE to rapidly deport someone, often without giving them a chance to see a judge. One of Trump’s recent obsessions, along with renaming the Gulf of Mexico and claiming Greenland, is hitting a record million deportations in his first year in office. Cancelling C.H.N.V. could give a quick boost to his current number. The government already has fingerprints and addresses for C.H.N.V. parolees; ICE can move on them now. (The same logic applies to other forms of mass illegalization, like revoking student visas: the Trump Administration could take credit for removing thousands of college kids.)” [The New Yorker]
Peter Wehner writes that the “Trump administration is a thugocracy, and the Republican Party he controls supports him each step of the way. Almost every principle to which Republicans once professed fealty has been jettisoned. The party is now devoted to the abuse of power and to vengeance. Political theorists recognize that the governing approach of Trump and the GOP embodies the philosophy of Nietzsche and Machiavelli. It’s all about the world of ‘Anything goes’ and ‘Might makes right.’ Laws and the Constitution are as malleable as hot wax; they can be reshaped as needed. Limited government has been traded for the Leviathan, and there are no constraints. The state has become a blunt-force instrument. The significance of this shift can hardly be overstated. A party that formerly proclaimed allegiance to the Constitution and the rule of law, warned about the concentration and abuse of power, and championed virtue, restraint, and moral formation has been transmogrified. The Republican Party now stands for everything it once loathed. [The Atlantic]
