Morning Briefing: Numerous members of Patriot Front, the neo-fascist White Nationalist group, reportedly descended on Kansas City, “holding a rally outside the National WWI Museum and Memorial and marching downtown carrying flags and chanting.” Members of Patriot Front “wore matching outfits of khaki and navy with white face masks, hats and sunglasses that obscured their faces,” and “many carried altered or upside-down American flags.”
Michail Chkhikvishvili, the alleged leader of an eastern European neo-Nazi group, has reportedly been “extradited to the United States from Moldova following his arrest last summer for allegedly instructing an undercover federal agent to dress as Santa Claus and hand out poisoned candy to Jewish children and racial minorities.”
In Washington, D.C., the Sinners and Saints restaurant was the target of apparent anti-LGBTIQ vandalism, as the “glass from the restaurant's front door was broken,” and “homophobic slur had been scrawled on a wall.” Local Law enforcement is reportedly “investigating the break-in as a suspected hate crime.”

Tess Owen writes that “US state department employees recently opened up their emails to find a PDF to their new ‘style guide’, which dictates what language and terminology they can and can’t use. According to this new updated guide, the term ‘racially or ethnically motivated violent extremism’ – ‘REMVE” or ‘RMVE’ – was now banned, except in situations where they were legally compelled to use it. While style guide updates in government agencies that tinker with acronyms between administrations are not unusual, the document did not yet propose an alternative term for the threat from the violent far right. Current and former state department officials told the Guardian that this was just one reason why they are concerned about how seriously the Trump administration will take the ongoing threat from white supremacists at home and abroad… In addition to the new ban on using language to refer to the threat of white supremacists, last month Marco Rubio, the secretary of state, unveiled a plan for huge cuts at the state department, which would result in the elimination of more than a hundred offices and about 700 jobs – including those whose portfolios include racially motivated violent extremism. Among the offices on the chopping block is the Office for Countering Violent Extremism, or ‘CVE’, which works on identifying root causes of radicalization and extremism to prevent terrorist attacks before they happen.” [The Guardian]
Jeet Heer writes that “in April, unexplained pizza deliveries started showing up at the private residences of more than two dozen federal judges as well as their family members. We know these unwanted deliveries were no random prank but a sinister threat because many of were made came under the name of Daniel Anderl, the son of a federal judge who was murdered in 2020 while protecting his parents from an angry litigant. The message was clear: ‘We know where you live, we know where you family lives, and we can kill you and your loved ones anytime we want.’ While the source of this campaign of intimidation remains as yet unsolved, it occurred during a time when President Donald Trump and his administration are increasingly inciting political anger against the judiciary—and MAGA followers are responding. With Congress under the control of Republicans and the leadership of the Democratic Party offering barely any opposition, the judiciary has become the main bastion of institutional restraint on the Trump administration. Federal judges have ruled against a raft of Trump initiatives, ranging from the deportation of immigrants without due process to the politically motivated punishment of Harvard University.” [The Nation]
Adam Serwer writes that “the warlords who sacked Rome did not intend to doom Western Europe to centuries of ignorance. It was not a foreseeable consequence of their actions. The same cannot be said of the sweeping attack on human knowledge and progress that the Trump administration is now undertaking—a deliberate destruction of education, science, and history, conducted with a fanaticism that recalls the Dark Ages that followed Rome’s fall. Every week brings fresh examples. The administration is threatening colleges and universities with the loss of federal funding if they do not submit to its demands, or even if they do. The engines of American scientific inquiry and ingenuity, such as the National Science Foundation and the National Institutes of Health, are under sustained attack. Historical institutions such as the Smithsonian and artistic ones like the Kennedy Center are being converted into homes for MAGA ideology rather than historical fact and free expression. Libraries are losing funding, government-employed scientists are being dismissed from their jobs, educators are being cowed into silence, and researchers are being warned not to broach forbidden subjects. Entire databases of public-health information collected over decades are at risk of vanishing. Any facts that contradict the gospel of Trumpism are treated as heretical. These various initiatives and policy changes are often regarded as discrete problems, but they comprise a unified assault.” [The Atlantic]
