Celia Fernández writes that “in reality, MAGA Communists say they don’t fully agree with Trump’s political vision. But addressing the working class through him, they explain, is the only way to channel working-class militancy away from capitalism and towards a communist future. The result is a strange and marginal alliance that includes people who hate feminism, environmentalism and the LGBTQI+ movements. An underworld of anti-system agitators where portraits of Putin and Kim Jong-un are accompanied by memes and jokes that come from the anti-feminist depths of the internet and that call for the salvation of ‘the honor of men.’ Ultimately, MAGA Communism, Reid Ross notes, is ‘a far-right agenda placed in an anti-imperialist environment.’ But even its anti-imperialism is showing its true colors. Hinkle recently posted a photo on X with Aleksandr Dugin — Putin’s go-to thinker — praising his anti-imperialism. Two days later, Dugin appeared on Russian television and said his people are the most imperialist in the world. [El País]
Maya Oppenheim writes that “in recent years, the far right has ballooned in size and power around the world, with the so-called alt-right, white supremacist movements, xenophobic populism, anti-migrant groups, the Identitarian movement and incels all falling under this same noxious banner. But far-right sentiment has not just swelled at the grassroots, activist levels; it has also found new and reinvigorated power in the political sphere. In the twenty-first century, far-right parties in Western Europe have become increasingly, disturbingly popular. This has spanned from the growing popularity of far-right populist parties in France, Spain, Germany, Sweden, Finland and Greece. After all, French far-right leader Marine Le Pen won a historic 13.3 million votes – which amounts to just over 41 per cent of the total – in April 2022. Moreover, authoritarian demagogues have also gained power at the national level, winning elections and becoming world leaders – as we have seen in Brazil, Italy, Hungary, Poland, Turkey, the Philippines and the US.” [openDemocracy]
Robert P. Jones writes that “the worldview of white Christian nationalism raises the stakes of political contests exponentially, transposing political opponents into existential enemies. Politics are no longer understood to be honest disagreements between fellow citizens but rather apocalyptic battles over good and evil, literally fought by agents of God against agents of Satan. From these illiberal assumptions, it easily follows that political rivals should not just be defeated in fair electoral contests; they should be jailed, exiled, or even killed. This racist ideology thankfully no longer rests comfortably in the psyches of most Americans. But it has, paradoxically, found a final refuge in the shambles of the party of Lincoln. More than any other discreet moment in the last half century, the 2024 election will present us with a choice that is much more than partisan. We will have an opportunity to choose between a regressive fantasy of America as a white Christian nation and an aspirational vision of America as a pluralistic democracy.” [Time]
