Morning Briefing: It has been one year since a White Supremacist shot and killed 10 people at the Tops Friendly Market in Buffalo, New York, and “many young Black people in Buffalo are grappling with a shaken sense of personal security and complicated feelings about how their community was targeted.”
The family members of the several of the victims of the Tops Friendly Market shooting have “ filed a lawsuit against social media companies that they allege facilitated the shooter’s white supremacist radicalization and gave him a platform to broadcast the violent massacre.”
The so-called “great replacement” theory, a racists conspiracy theory promoted by White Nationalists, “has inspired many other attacks carried out by white extremists against people of color, immigrants, Jewish people and Muslims.”
Hundreds of members of Patriot Front, the neo-fascist White Nationalist group, “were monitored by the police as they paraded through the National Mall in Washington D.C.”
The Masjid Al Sunnah Mosque in St. Paul, Minnesota was vandalized, which is reportedly the “fifth time someone vandalized a Minnesota mosque so far this year.”

Hunter Walker reports that TPM has “uncovered an extensive digital trail of interconnected Groyper social media pages using variations of the “ChickenRight” and “Chikken” handles that can be linked to Wade Searle, who works as the digital director for Rep. Paul Gosar (R-AZ), one of the most extreme, far-right members of Congress. ChickenRight’s posting on far-right websites and Searle’s alleged involvement with Fuentes occurred before and after he started working in Gosar’s Capitol Hill office. Gosar, his chief of staff, his press secretary, and Searle have not responded to multiple detailed requests for comment. Fuentes is one of the far-right leaders who gained prominence during the Trump era. His open embrace of Nazism and usage of racial epithets is extreme even within this alt-right movement. The revelation that a devotee of Fuentes appears to have infiltrated a congressional office represents a previously unknown and unseen degree of influence for the modern white supremacist movement." Amanda Marcotte writes that it’s not clear how the White Supremacist neo-Nazi who shot and killed 8 people in Allen, Texas entered “into the world of fascist politics was. Still, the prominence of incel rhetoric in his feed is a crucial reminder of how central misogyny and male insecurity are to far-right recruitment strategies. When a man buys into the mythology of toxic masculinity but also feels he's falling short of his own macho ideals, he's the perfect mark for fascists online looking to grow their numbers. As I wrote about last year, the ‘masculinity’ influencer Andrew Tate, who is currently under house arrest in Romania on rape charges, is the clearest example of how this works. He puts out videos and other social media that purport to offer advice to young men on how to get laid and make money. But really, it's a bait-and-switch. He doesn't offer substantive advice at all, but instead bamboozles young men into believing that the pathway to ladies-and-riches is being a misogynist jerk. Of course, the opposite is true, as both women and employers back away from guys who are parroting Tate's rhetoric. That works to Tate's benefit.” [Salon]
Amanda Moore writes that “there is an appeal to being viewed as the cool kids, especially within an organization whose membership includes people as young as 18. Where is the fun in being a moderate Republican without controversy when you can be a scandal-laden Rep. George Santos (R-N.Y.)? Who wants to tweet with decorum to 100 followers when you can sling insults at everyone you disagree with, wracking up tens of thousands? Earlier this year, the D.C. Young Republicans voted in leadership that mimics the NYYRC model. Now George Santos attends its events and its Twitter seems to primarily exist to lob insults at everyone who crosses them. One source familiar with the D.C. Republican scene said all the staffers and ‘adult’ GOP members they know are staying away from the D.C. YRs—’which tells you how useful they are pursuing good policy.’ The NYYRC model might be appealing to those who seek out personal fame over effective leadership, but it’s driving away anyone who finds the bullying repulsive.” [Daily Dot]
