The Insurrectionist Cookbook Podcast
What were the circumstances that caused thousands of Americans to take part in a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021? Could it happen again?
What is the Insurrectionist Cookbook?
On January 6, 2021, thousands of supporters of former President Donald Trump stormed the U.S. Capitol Building, and the consequences of that day’s events have reverberated throughout American society.
There are a handful of events in American history which have become synonymous with the date they occurred; July 4th, September 11th, and January 6th. However, it is impossible to understand what happened on those historic days without understanding the events that occurred in the days, weeks, months, or even years before.
The Insurrectionist Cookbook is a podcast that will seek to answer two questions: What were the circumstances that caused thousands of Americans to take part in a violent insurrection on January 6, 2021? Could it happen again?
To answer those questions, this podcast will provide analysis of the historic, cultural, and political context of the Capitol Riot, examine the ongoing criminal investigations of the individuals that participated in the Capitol Riot, and investigate how the far right is animated by the response to the Capitol Riot.
Episode 1: Retaliation Campaign
In this first episode of the podcast, I have a conversation with Jared Holt, a Senior Researcher of U.S. hate and extremist movements at the Institute for Strategic Dialogue. Holt was previously a resident fellow at the Digital Forensic Lab, Investigative Reporter at Right Wing Watch, and Researcher at Media Matters for America.
Holt joins the podcast to talk about how far right extremists organized before and after the January 6th Insurrection. After the interview, please stay tuned to hear about what to expect from the podcast in the coming weeks, and how you can support this project.
