The Briefing: Supporters of President Donald Trump that attacked the U.S. Capitol Building on January 6, 2021 are now reportedly “suing Capitol and D.C. Police for excessive force.” A lawsuit filed in the the U.S. District Court Middle District of Florida alleges that members of the U.S. Capitol Police and the Metropolitan Police attacked a “peaceful crowd.”

The U.S. Supreme Court issued an order to allows the U.S. Justice Department to “move forward with dismissing a criminal ​case” against Steve Bannon, who was “convicted after defying a congressional subpoena.”

Kaleb Christopher Merritt pleaded guilty to “leading a child exploitation enterprise connected to an internet-based extremist group that entices and targets children into producing child sexual abuse material (CSAM) and images of self-harm,” according to a statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California.

Known online as “eTerror,” Merritt admitted his participation as a member and leader of an online group which “espoused neo-Nazism, nihilism and pedophilia as core principles and was dedicated to exposing children, primarily young girls, to material depicting and promoting these ideas.”

Legislation that would allow anyone to file a lawsuit over the removal of Confederate monuments failed to pass by a “whisper-thin margin” in the Republican-controlled Georgia State House.

Thanks to an army of fans bent on broadening his audience, clips of Fuentes sounding well mannered and oddly agreeable now regularly go viral on the very social-media platforms that have officially banned him for his hate speech and anti-Semitism… Many left-wing social-media users are as mistrustful of mainstream-media outlets as Fuentes’s usual fans, which may prime them to reconsider a figure the usual gatekeepers have dismissed. People on the outer edges of the political spectrum also tend to share anti-elitist, anti-establishment views, which can shade into the hatreds that Fuentes is so skilled at tapping.” [The Atlantic]

• Jason Wilson writes that the “newly appointed College Republicans of America political director Kai Schwemmer has made racist, antisemitic, homophobic and sexist statements while espousing extremist rightwing views on abortion, a Guardian review of livestream recordings can reveal. Schwemmer said he would accept a world in which slavery was legal if abortion was criminalized, describes himself as ‘very much an anti universal suffrage guy’ and accepts a supporter’s description of him as ‘our Mormon Nick Fuentes’ – referring to the white nationalist influencer whose platform he streamed on for years. The comments were made after Schwemmer’s return from a two-year Mormon mission to Argentina, a period he recently claimed had seen him undergo a “process of growth” that led him to abandon previous racist beliefs. Schwemmer had previously expressed extremist and bigoted views.” [The Guardian]

• Rachel Monroe writes that “when Trump first announced his Presidential run, evangelical élites, like other institutionalists, were slow to embrace the crude, multiply divorced New Yorker who struggled to name his favorite Bible verse. Much of Trump’s initial support came from the nondenominational charismatic world. (Charismatic Christianity is centered on worshippers’ direct, personal encounters with the Holy Spirit, and maintains that the prophetic revelations and demonic attacks of the Church’s early era are still active forces today.) These churches, which largely existed outside established hierarchies, were quicker to tap into their congregants’ interest in Trump. Many key figures were associated with a movement known as the New Apostolic Reformation, which aims to establish Christian dominion over American society and government.” [The New Yorker]

Stewart Rhodes, founder and former leader of the far right militia group the Oath Keepers, is planning to get the organization “back up and running.” Rhodes has been waiting to relaunch the militia group until he is granted a pardon for his convictions for seditious conspiracy and evidence tampering related to his participation in the attack on the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021.

Rhodes received a commutation from President Donald Trump, and has been publicly lobbying for a full pardon. Rhodes also suggested his pardon request may be viewed favorably Trump’s pardon attorney Ed Martin, who “personally reviewed a pardon application” for Rhodes.

During a recent interview, Rhodes spoke approvingly of Trump’s deployment of the National Guard to Los Angeles, California and Washington, D.C. and Trump’s deployment of the military along the U.S.-Mexico border. Rhodes said that Trump “should call us all up,” suggesting the president should create a government sectioned militia, because “we are obviously facing an invasion… the border has been intentionally left open by domestic internal enemies — traitors.”

“He should have the military defend the border, he should invoke the Insurrection Act, and he should call us all up,” Rhodes said. “He should call all of us, every able bodied male in this nation… could be called up as the militia.”

This summer, Rhodes has been on a speaking tour around Texas with True Texas Project, a far right Christian nationalist group. Rhodes has previously spoken at five events sponsored by True Texas Project, and is scheduled to speak at upcoming events in Katy and Tomball.

Rhodes has also spoken at other events throughout Texas, including events sponsored by the Lee County Republican Party, Bowie County Patriots, Central Texas Tea Party, and Dallas Chapter of the John Birch Society. Rhodes also recently attended the 90th birthday party of former Congressman Ron Paul — and posed for a photo with pardoned Capitol Rioter Jennifer Heinl.

Pardoned Capitol Rioters were reportedly “recruited to help the Texas Hill Country” after the flooding, including Rhodes — who said that he was joined by Larry Brock, retired U.S. Air Force officer who “dressed in combat gear and carried zip-tie handcuffs” in to the U.S. Capitol building.

E.J. Antoni, who was recently nominated by President Donald Trump to be the Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, was reportedly “among the crowd outside the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021,” and the White House claims that Antoni was a "bystander" – and that Antoni “wandered over after seeing coverage on the news.”

Members of the Seattle Police Department that attended the “Stop the Steal” rally prior to the attack on the U.S. Capitol building on January 6, 2021 reportedly said during interviews the Office of Police Accountability (OPA) that “they didn't see anything out of place,” and that “they were unaware of any illegal activity.”
